Early Chinese physicians used auricular acupuncture, treating patients by placing needles in the external ear. The first record was in the Huang Di Nei Jing, where it says in chapter 28 of the spiritual axis ‘ all vessels congregate in the ear’. However it was in France in the 1957 when Dr Paul Nogier, a French doctor from Lyon elaborated a system in which different areas of the body are represented by the ear. This system was developed after observing scars on the ears of patients with sciatica. The Chinese soon after started producing their own maps of the auricle. Before the French system there was no corresponding auricular map in China. There are many differences between the French and Chinese systems. The UCLA pain management centre in Los Angeles compared the work of the Nogier and Chinese systems under the guidance of Terry Oleson Ph.D. He presented a standardized, auricular nomenclature designating anatomical zones of the ear and designating numbers to all the points with an indication of their French or Chinese origin and a name corresponding to the part of the body it represented. This was printed in nine languages and was designed for international use.
Auricular acupuncture is a very powerful treatment, both on its own and as a support for full body acupuncture. One of the greatest assets of auricular acupuncture is the ability to change the mood of a patient, as well as the relaxing and stress relief actions frequently seen. Research has shown this is because of the direct action on brain chemistry, neurotransmitters and hormones. This also explains the pain relieving properties of auricular acupuncture as this effects the endorphin levels, the body's natural pain killers to release more into the body.
Auricular acupuncture is also excellent for detoxification, especially with drug addiction. It is used throughout the UK in treatment centres for this purpose. It is also very effective for the management of prescribed medication and its side effects, including chemotherapy.
